Martín Herrera

I’m passionate about building things that people will treasure, and I’m always looking for play within work. I’m honored to have the opportunity to attend The Krenov School — to deepen my connection to the craft, learn from my peers and the teachers here, and connect with the community and heritage surrounding the school. While here, I hope to develop my practice and refine my expression by drawing on my personal and Hispanic heritage.


My family and I came to the US from Medellín, Colombia, when I was young. Growing up, my mom was the power-tool jockey in the house (when I left, my childhood bedroom became her second studio and laser-cutter room), and my grandmother was a sculptor and woodcarver. Making, then, was something I was born into and raised within. I followed this passion first as a mechanical engineer in consumer products, and for the last six years, into tools built for woodworkers.


San Francisco is home, and I love my city and community there (shout out Frisco and The Bay). In my free time I enjoy making art, photography, sewing, soccer, weightlifting, and DJing. My favorite memories revolve around being social, active, or creative. I try to find and build community in all aspects of my life, from the mundane to the intimate.
