This course is a follow up class to our first Summer Course Tools and Techniques, WOD70A, and cannot be taken without completing WOD70A
Using the skills learned in WOD70A each student will make a small, simple, but elegant solid-door wall cabinet, box or tabletop cabinet. In this session, students will begin by selecting project elements from a plank, with consideration of color and grain graphics in mind. Your design should have no more than one door and one drawer, and be relatively small and simple, in order to be able to achieve as much as possible in our limited time. Curved work, veneering, steam bending, bent lamination will not be possible in this class, so keep your ideas simple, small and sweet!
Primary techniques to be experienced in this class include edge joining, re-sawing, doweling, frame-and-panel work, and door/lid hinging. Learning is not limited to methods, but will also involve the discovery of a sensitive, flexible approach to building.
Students will be expected to present their idea to Greg before class begins, in the form a simple sketch or description to determine the feasibility of their idea. Greg can be reached at gsmith@mendocino.edu prior to class in order to start the conversation.
You are encouraged to bring wood for your project if you have it, perhaps that special board that you have been saving for so many years. We will also have some wood available for purchase if needed. Each student is responsible for their own wood and hardware. Approximately 10-12 board feet of 1″ thick lumber will be used. Try to select woods that are easily work with hand tools.
Extra Tools and Materials Required
For the Small Project class you will be expected to purchase your own project materials (wood, hardware and finish).
You will be encouraged to source your wood before coming….maybe that special board that you have been saving for something good. A two-inch plank with a minimum width of six inches, totaling 12 board feet, will allow for room for choices. Bring extra if you have it. If you do not have wood available yourself, we will try our best to find something suitable to sell you here at the woodshop.
